The 2011 National High School Finals Rodeo is Underway in Gillette, WY

High school students from 5 Canadian provinces, 41 states and Australia made their way to Gillette, WY this past weekend for the 2011 National High School Finals Rodeo.  The first performance took place Sunday, July 17th in the evening.  Each day there are two performances – one in the morning and one in the evening.  Round 1 takes place July 17th-July 20th and Round 2 takes place July 21st-July 23rd.  The Championship performance will take place in the evening of Saturday, July 23rd.

Here’s a brief look at where the Canadian contestants are sitting overall in the top 20 so far in Round 1 after Performance 3 (July 18th):

In the barrel racing, currently Gaileen Babcock of Fort St John, BC is sitting 7th with a time of 17.889.  As of last night’s performance the fastest time in the barrels so far is a 17.316 posted by Rachel Primm of Washoe Valley, NEV.

In the breakaway roping, Taylor Smith of Rimbey, AB is currently sitting 4th with a time of 2.66 seconds.  Jessica Willick of Blaine Lake, SK is sitting 9th with a time of 2.84 seconds.  Currently sitting 14th is Ellis Smith of Williams Lake, BC with a 3 seconds flat.  As of last night’s performance the fastest time in the breakaway roping so far is a 2.55 posted by Katelyn McRee of Pagaso Springs, CO.

In the goat tying, Sarah Wright of Langley, BC is currently sitting 6th with a time of 8.97 secondsShania Johnston of Union Center, S.D. is leading the goat tying with a time of 7.82 seconds.

In the bull riding, Landon Lockhart of Brandon, MB is currently sitting in 16th place so far with a score of 66Devin Graham of 150 Mile House, BC is sitting 18th so far with his score of 65 points.  The leader in the bull riding so far as of Monday evening’s performance is Cody Mathews, Jr. from Bosque, N.M. with his score of 82 points.

In the steer wrestling, Stephen Culling from Fort St. John, BC posted a time of 7.44 seconds which has put him currently in 8th place.  Dayton Martell out of Pilot Butte, SK got his steer down in 9.85 seconds placing him currently in 19th spot.  As of Monday’s evening performance, Noah Lassa of Merrill, Wisc. is leading the steer wrestling with his time of 5.4 seconds.

In the pole bending, as of last night’s performance there is only one Canadian in the top 20.  Maddy Mills of Kamloops, BC is currently sitting 14th with a time of 21.106 seconds.  The pole bending is currently being lead by Shaylee Thacker with a time of 20.22 seconds.

In the tie-down roping, there is also only one Canadian in the top 20 so far.  TJ Milne of Fairview, AB tied his calf in 11.23 seconds to currently place him in 8th position.  Bryson Sechrist of Apache, OK is currently leading the tie-down roping with his time of 8.52 seconds.

In the team roping, there are no Canadian contestants sitting in the top 20 as of last night’s performance (July 18th).  Sam Nave and Tyler Worley of Arkansas are currently leading the team roping with a time of 6.43 seconds.

In the bareback riding, Tanner Young of Fairview, AB is sitting 11th so far with his score of 63 points.  Kody Lamb out of Sherwood Park, AB is sitting 11th with his score of 61 points.  The bareback riding is currently being lead by Blaine Koufman from Kansas with his score of 76.

In the saddle bronc riding, currently as of last night’s performance, Dillon Barkshire from Delburne, AB is sitting 6th with a score of 64.  Dantan Bertsch of Coaldale, AB is sitting 15th so far with his score of 47 points.  The saddle bronc is currently being lead by Ty Hamm of Kansas with his score of 75 points.

In the boys cutting, there are currently no Canadian contestants in the top 20.  The boys cutting is currently being lead by Dax Hadlock of Ogden, Utah with a score of 220.

In the girls cutting, Hailey Stewart out of High River, AB is sitting 7th currently with a score of 213.  The girls cutting as of Monday evening’s performance is being lead by Hannah Holsey from Lovelady, TX with a score of 218.

As of Monday evening’s performance, Taylor Smith from Rimbey, AB is currently tied for 9/10th spot for the All Around Cowgirl.
