Take “Root Sixty Six” to Victory

by Katy on November 24, 2013

She was hoping the year 2013 would bring both consistency and progress; Lynette Brodoway got what she asked for with “SR Root Sixty Six”.

The Canadian bred horse by the Sandy Ridge Stallion Station out of the stud “Root Beers Boots” made two great runs at the 2013 Canadian Barrel Futurity and Derby Championship during the long go’s, then bested himself in the short go, making the fastest standard-pattern run in both his and Brodoway’s careers.

Don’t forget this big boy as he moves on from Derbies and into the pro rodeo circuit next year.

How long have you been running barrels on the horse?

I have been competitively running him since he was 5.

What is the training background on this horse?

I trained him on the barrels myself.

How would you describe this horse’s running style?

He has a very unique style; really likes to use his butt. For as big as he is he can really get around a barrel quick! He is a very strong and powerful horse.

What is it you like best about him?

He is a real gentleman; he is a very honest horse that just wants to please.

Of the runs you made on this horse during the Championship weekend, which was your favourite and why?

My favourite run would be my short go run. I ran a personal best on a standard pattern and on second barrel Freeway literally jumped out of the way just so he would not hit the barrel.

Want to take a look at that run? The video included in this posting has the entire finals short go! Lynette is last out.

How do you prepare for your runs?

I like to go out and lope a few circles make sure he is backed off and using his butt. Then I like to go and just sit and relax until we run.

What kind of saddle do you use?

Raylee Racer

What kind of pad do you use?

5 Star Pad (wool)

What kind of bit do you use?

Custom made Dave Elliot

Are there any specific goals you set for yourself and your horse this season and how did the outcome of the season compare to your original goals?

I am always looking for consistency and progress, Freeway went above and beyond my expectations for this year. He amazes me every day.

What are your future plans for this horse now that he is too old for derbies?

I am planning on going to a few pro rodeos with him this spring and we will see how it goes from there.

If you were to share a futurity/derby horse training tip what would it be?

Horsemanship is a big role that plays in my training program; I believe they have to be broke before going to the pattern. I like to try and make training fun for the horse and use different exercises away from the pattern so they don’t get bored or over trained.
With all the hype about “American Bred” horses or the power people talk about with horses coming from the states, how do you think your Canadian bred horse compares or contrasts?

I think that our Canadian bred horses are just as good as the American bred. We have some great stallions up here as well as good mares.

A big thank you to Doug and Carol Schaffer at Sandy Ridge Stallion Station for having me in mind when they bred “Root Beer Boots” to their great mare “KR Miss Six Fols”.
