There may have been some first round jitters, but Team Canada looked strong in round 1 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. I’m certain we’ll see each of them in the winners circle before the week is done.
Orin Larson was the only Canadian in the money splitting 3rd 4 ways. He rode the bareback horse Wild N Blue for a 81 point ride. Zeke Thurston covered his Saddle Bronc horse for 74.5 ride putting him in 9th place. Tyrel Larson had a bit of trouble making the whistle as did four others in the opening round of the bronc riding. Tanner Milan proved he was all cowboy with a never give up attitude when he held one horn to bring the steer back and throw him in 6.1 seconds. Cowboy tough, keeps Milan in the steer wrestling average.
Deb Guelly was first out on the opening night and nudged first barrel on the way in to cost her 5 seconds. She rode a borrowed mount named Oscar (Senor La Jolla) who is owned by the Colliers. The duo were not far off the pace as she coasted through and felt things out. It reminded me of the first run she made on Sonny at the CFR as they got to know each other in that arena. They later came back to make some serious coin and a round win. I’m confident we will see these two in the money real soon!
He may not have made the Canadian contestant picture, but TJ the calf horse is also representing Canada under the guidance of Shane Hanchy. TJ is owned by Nanton Alberta’s Logan Bird. Hanchy will paying mount money from last nights run as TJ helped him pick up 5th place with a 7.5 second run.
