Alberta Cowgirl Tara Muldoon, and her mare Revy have been on a roll. Even without their big win in Ponoka, AB they had over $8,000 won in the CPRA standings. Winning Ponoka, however will go down as a game changing rodeo for the duo. With a goal of ending the year in the top 4, the duo currently lead the CPRA Barrel Racing standings with 20,842.26 to their name. The first round of the Ponoka Stampede, they placed 5th behind 4 NFR qualifiers with a 17.55. They won the Short Go (video below) with a 17.3. Combining these times Tara and Revy won the average on two runs ahead of Kaley Bass and Lisa Lockart. In the Final Show Down they won another $3750 for their second place finish with a 17.241 making their total paycheck from Ponoka $12,149.06!
Thank you Tara for taking the time to tell us a little about your horse and your program for success.
What is your horse’s registered and barn name?
Reved and Rapid we call her Revy
-How long have you been running barrels on her?
3 years
-What is the training background on this horse?
We bought her as a yearling, my mom started her, I futuritied her then my mom derbied her a little. Last year was her first year on the road & I was so impressed that she made the CFR her first year out.
– How would you describe this horses running style?
She loves to turn, I work hard to get her by the barrels.
-What is it you like best about her?
She is probably one of the smartest horses I’ve ever ridden. She knows what I want before I ask & makes my job easy.
– You made three runs at Ponoka, which one was your favorite and why?
I was so happy with all of them it’s hard to choose, she was so consistent and parts of all of them were great, she laid down a run in the mud in the long go, the short go win was the prettiest when I watch it back & hearing the crowd go wild during the showdown round was really cool, I’m glad I could represent Canada in our event on Canada Day.
-How do you prepare for your runs (warm up etc.)? Did you change anything between runs?
We long trot to loosen her up then lope a few big circles, finishing with tight circles. I make sure she’s soft in my hands then let her relax until we run.
No I didn’t change anything haha – if it’s not broke don’t fix it!
-What kind of saddle do you use?
Martha Josey Ultimate
-What kind of pad do you use?
Pro Choice Air Ride
-What kind of bit do you use?
Sweet Six Twisted Snaffle
-Are there any specific goals you set for yourself and your horse this season?
My goal right from the start of the season has been to finish the year in the top four so that I can qualify for Calgary I really think she’d like that pen.
-Do you have any barrel racing tips you could share?
1. Build a bond with your horse, put them first, build their confidence. If things aren’t going well don’t give your horse hell, check yourself & make adjustments.
2. Get your mental game together, keep a positive mindset & surround yourself with good people.
-What do you do when your aren’t barrel racing?
I work full time so in the summer between rodeo & work I don’t have much spare time haha, but when I do have some time I like to get out on the trails on my dirtbike & in the winter I snowboard quite a bit.
A few people I’d like to thank are my Mom & Dad, they are my biggest fans, and are so supportive, saying thank you is never enough for all they do! My brother Chad for keeping Rev’s feet in fine form. I’m not a big fan of being on the road but my travel buddy Wacey makes it alot of fun! Most of all I have to thank Revy, what a cool ride she is and I’m just so grateful to her.
Watch Tara and Revy win the Short Go at Ponoka, AB with a 17.37
