It was a big night for Canadian Steer Wrestler Lee Graves and he didn’t even qualify for the finals!   He is down there hazing for Trevor Knowles and Jason Miller.  PLUS Trevor and Jason are using Lee’s great horse Jesse!      The duo split first and second with a 3.9 in the round Thursday night, so you can expect Lee will cash in with hazing and mount fees!

There were two Canadian horses that bucked in the Saddle Bronc riding, but neither were able to carry their rider into the pay window.  Jesse Wright was on Calgary Stampede horse Knife Money and Jacobs Crawley on the Kesler horse Free Agent.

In the barrel racing the solo Canadian competitor Lindsay Sears split the round with Brittany Pozzi.   Their time was 14.03. Sears was unable to gain any ground on Pozzi who currently leads the world standings.   North Dakota barrel racer and NFR rookie Britany Fleck tipped a barrel , but the other Northern cowgirl and rookie Jane Melby tied for 4/5 with Sherry Cervi for a 14.08 second time.  Sears was quoted as saying “the ground felt great, best she’s seen it for the first round”.   Sears on Pozzi were bottom of the ground.    That’s a good sign for future rounds….and perhaps a new arena record in the works?

Here is the first round:

Thursday Jane Melby’s horse RC Back in Black (aka Beauty) were awarded a really special award.  The Rising Star Award is awarded to a first time WNFR qualifier to honor all the great ones that should never be forgotten. The Scoti Flit Bar Rising Star Award, is given by WPRA member Lana Merrick in honor of her great NFR horse. Scoti Flit Bar and Merrick qualified for a pair of NFR’s in 1987 and 1989 before Merrick lost her great partner to a rare blood disease.   RC Back in Black is sired by Ninety Nine Goldmine out of a Royal Quick Dash daughter.

Brittany Pozzi also has a Canadian connection with Rana Koopmans from Lethbridge, AB being her right hand man down there.  Rana takes great care of Brittany’s horses while she tends to the many obligations she has down there.

Another Canadian in the arena this year is  CrASH Cooper, the barrel man.  I’ll have to watch the rodeo (rather than just on the radio) to give a report on his performance 🙂

Stay tuned and follow us on FACEBOOK if you are connected there for more updates and hopefully some video footage and updates coming soon.

Here is an interview with Cody Ohl who won the Tie Down roping.  On the radio they were saying this was Cody’s 50th go round win (but they also called Brittany Pozzi…..Brittany Spears) In this interview I think they say 41 and counting.   Either way its pretty wild!  Can you imagine all those go round buckles!? He’s probably getting pretty good at his acceptance speech too.
