In Canada, the professional barrel racers operate and run under the rules of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA). This is different than in the United States, where the pro barrel racers run under the rules of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). The WPRA sanctions barrel races and women’s rodeos alone, but also have rodeos sanctioned with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and CPRA. These cosanctioned rodeos are what the ladies use to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo.

The current ladies barrel racing director for the CPRA is Randa Nugent. Randa Lives near Water Valley, Alberta with her husband Mark and children Ryatt (10) and Court (8).
Most of her days are spent in the saddle. Randa is a professional barrel racer herself. She runs futurity/derby horses, rides client horses and keeps her own horses legged up and ready to run (when she isn’t running the kids to gymnastics!).
We asked Randa some questions about her position as the Ladies Barrel Racing Director for the CPRA
How long have you been the CPRA Barrel Racing Director?
I have been the director for 3 1/2 years
What made you decide to take on this position?
Insanity!! LOL That is a tough one…the director at the time had other commitments that prevented her from finishing her term. I really didn’t feel I was ready to step up, but there was really no one else that was remotely interested in taking on the position…. (and as they say, the rest is history!)
How long is the term and when is it up?
A term is 2 years and my 2nd term is up the end of 2012
What are some of your responsibilities as the director?
Setting the LBR’s reps for each rodeo to mark the pattern, attend monthly CPRA meetings, answer questions from members, committees and sponsors, sit on various other committees pertaining to rodeo.
What do you enjoy most about this position?
I enjoy seeing the LBR event grow every year. I truly enjoy sitting on the Board of Directors and working with committees/sponsors/contestants.
What is your least favorite part?
Trying to make everyone happy – which is impossible!
Do you have any specific goals or plans as the CPRA Barrel Racing Director?
To improve the ground conditions by working with the committees to get a better understanding of what needs to be done.
Can you offer any advice to barrel racing directors in some of the amateur/semi pro associations?
Try to have a good working relationship with the committees and other event reps. Remembering that we all need to work together because rodeo won’t survive if we don’t stay united.
Are there any rule changes that barrel racers should be aware of for the upcoming season?
The WPRA has just recently changed the dress code so the CPRA is going to be changing as well. (long sleeved, collared, button or snap up shirts and jeans without holes, western boots and cowboy hat)
The CPRA had tried to implement this a few years ago but it didn’t go over well because the WPRA dress code was different. I feel that as long as we are on the same page it should work out for the best.
How has this rule change been received by members?
So far there has been nothing but positive feedback. I have always wondered why we need a special dress code for LBR when we are all rodeo contestants so I feel this has us headed in the right direction.
When committees are looking to improve the ground conditions for barrel racing what advice do you offer?
To talk to other committees that have had issues in the past and what they did to correct it. Good ground is good for RODEO not just barrel racing. There is a misconception that we as barrel racers want deep ground but that is not true we just want safe ground.

Thanks for putting a little light on our director, Randa. I personally appriciate the hard work she does. It is hard to make everyone happy so that is why it is important to have someone as your director that is easy to talk to. We are not all going to have the same opinion about everything that is why we need a director that knows alot about rodeo and wants the best for our event, it’s contestants and the whole sport of rodeo…… Thanks Randa.
